No-go for the logo

Grocery retail is bruising — in the battle to woo shoppers, anything goes. But sometimes it goes a little too far and the referee is brought in. So it was last week, when a High Court judge ruled that Tesco’s Clubcard logo (a yellow circle on blue) infringed on Lidl’s corporate logo (a yellow circle on blue with red edges). The ruling found that Tesco had “taken unfair advantage” of Lidl’s reputation for everyday low prices by using a similar design, although it stopped short of concluding that the supermarket giant had deliberately intended to do so. Tesco has vowed to appeal.
